Getting Ready for your Headshot Session

  • Before our shoot, take a few minutes to look at your face in the mirror and play with your smile level in your eyes and mouth. Ask yourself, what looks more natural, confident, and approachable? We’ll spend our session focusing on these traits that read best in a headshot portrait.

Throughout our shoot I’ll coach your posing and we’ll work together to boost your confidence.

One of my favorite portrait photographers, David Suh, has excellent video playlists for both feminine and masculine posing tips.

  • If you wear glasses day-to-day, please feel free to wear them during your headshot session. If not, I usually suggest avoiding glasses since flash photography is much more flexible without their reflection.

Wear what makes you feel most confident and represents your style of professionalism. Solid colors tend to work best and avoid layering with patterns as they tend to read poorly on camera and are more difficult to edit, post-production.

Headshot photography doesn’t leave much real estate for accessories but feel free to accessorize how you see fit.

  • Starting about a week before your photo shoot, keep your face hydrated & moisturized. If you tend to show a 5 o’clock shadow, make sure to schedule your session earlier in the day or, if possible, shave just before our session.

Plan your next haircut / trim a few days before your headshot.

If you wear makeup, the general rule of “less is more” applies. There are many options in post-production to achieve similar effects.
